The Tahiti Village Timeshare Scam

  • Sep. 19th, 2008 at 9:33 PM

I can't help it... this is so interesting once you get a basic understanding of how timeshares work!

I did several hours (I didn't mean to... but once you get reading about the tricks of selling a timeshare, it's hard to stop!) of reading concerning timeshares.  Then I spent about another hour reading about the Tahiti Village deal.  What's the deal?

http://www.consolidatedresorts.com/special_offers.aspx

"Consolidated Resorts Invites You to Be Our Guest!  Enjoy 3 Days and 2 Nights at a Beautiful Las Vegas Resort With Tickets To a HOT Las Vegas Show!  Consolidated Resorts is pleased to extend this fabulous 3 Day / 2 Night complimentary stay at a Las Vegas resort to all qualified committed couples. This romantic getaway also includes 2 tickets to one of Las Vegas' hot shows."

Sounds awesome!  A friend and I considered going (we weren't aware it was for couples only at the time... lol... "qualified committed couples").  But wait... check out these reviews.

we were offered a romantic getaway, 2nd honeymoon, well actually first for my fiance and i. we were give a room at tropicana hotel and nobody from your company was present at check-in. we were charged for the weekend in the hotel and did not get our $100 deposit back. very unprofessional customer relationships. they wouldn't even let us take the tour of the village, and i came looking to buy! the office members at tropican did not let us, take the tour because they said we didnt have a matching adress on our ID's, since we just moved in together.. . we had a business letter with her name and our address on it... and my letter fell out of my suitcase... when i arrived back at home i saw it sitting on my bed... i said that i could have it faxed that evening and they declined our offer to come back another weekend and take the tour. i am very upset with everyone at this company. we would have left the hotel the first day if we would have had someone communicate with us that we would be charged. i had no problem with paying for the night we stayed. but i am not happy with getting charged for the whole weekend and losing our deposit... total loss= $427 (deposit and hotel) + $50 gas from LA = a very unhappy NOT FREE weekend like we were promised. we didn't even receive any of our free show tickets or ANY other gifts that we were promised. Tahiti Village will be getting a letter from my attorney!!!

Damn.  First of all, you're led to believe that you're going to stay at the Tahiti Village, when in fact, you're staying at a hotel in Vegas that costs a fraction of this. The average cost of the Tahiti Village?  About $250 per night.  The deposit is a mere $100 (actually, I've heard that the cost is higher in some cases.  I can't quite figure out what's up with this considering it should be the same for everyone... aside from the fact that we've already been told it's a FREE hotel stay.) but you aren't going to get it back.  Thus, you're charged what you THINK is a portion of the cost you'd originally spend on the hotel, PLUS you'll get it back!  Really, you're paying more than you would for a cheap hotel that you're going to end up in.

We were told that we would be staying at the Frontier Hotel which, they claimed, had a nice pool (we asked as the pool is important to us.) When we arrived at the hotel, we had to stand in line for a full hour before we could register, but that wasn't as disappointing as the fact that the "nice" pool was empty and had yellow caution tape all around it. We complained to the Tahiti Village rep at the Frontier, who told us that we would forfeit our deposit plus another $197 if we decided not to stay at the Frontier, so we checked in. We went on the tour the next day, which actually took 3 hours and 37 minutes, including the bus ride to the Tahiti Village, of which approximately 10 minutes were spent in actually showing us the grounds and a typical room.

Most folks in reviews claimed that the presentation was only supposed to take about 90 minutes out of their free vacation.

The website says free wifi in the lobby. Not so here. You want the internet in your room, you can have it...for $11/day. That’s right per day. Oh, so you forgot your laptop. That's fine. Its only $.50/min. in the business center. Yes, you read right, fifty cents per minute. If the website would just say "we will shake you down to use the internet," I wouldn't be mad. However, it did (at least admittedly by the staff) say so a few months ago that it was free! So we're past being disconnected from the rest of the world, now everything else should be great.

"The trick to avoiding scams is to give yourself time to digest information, and to pick up on red flags that indicate a scam."  "When you're targeted by timeshare scams, however, you'll be asked to sign the contract on the spot, and sales people will act offended if you want time to consider." - Tips on Avoiding Timeshare Scams

Or, apparently, the Internet to Google hotel prices in Vegas vs. a timeshare.

Alright, one more and I'll stop.  It's just too good not to add.

Upon stating to them our marital agreement to make no rushed financial decisions without thorough discussion, the "heavy hitter" was called to our table and explained what a great opportunity this was because it was the Grand Opening of Phase II and how this offer would only be available today. At this point he reduced the purchase price of $47,000 to $26,000 AND would throw in 4 trips anywhere in the world for us to use for the next 6 years. We once again stated that we were very interested in purchasing this property, but we asked for 12 hours to think about it and get back to him in the morning. He then told us "by law" he could not make this offer again after today. Once again we asked to allow us to give him our decision in the morning, he then reduced the purchase price to $12,000 and told us which color balloon has the "GRAND PRIZE TRIP" inside it. He then told us that we would be "a--holes" not to purchase today at this price. At this point my husband and I were offended, we got up from the table and went into the hallway. We were quickly followed by our agent and the "heavy hitter" and were not allowed to talk alone. At this point, my husband told him that we did not appreciate being spoken to that way and stated that we no longer have interest in this property. It was then stated that we "must be a--holes with no money". Our "agent" then immediately escorted us to a window where we were given a bag with coupons in it and she pointed down the hall to the elevator and said that we could get out that way. It lead us to a side exit where there was a less than desirable shuttle bus waiting to take us back to our hotel (along with all the other non-buyers).
